Asthma / Anaphylaxis Conditional Protocol Summary

This protocol has been developed by the medical staff to reflect standing orders for care of athlete’s experiencing signs and symptoms of asthma/anaphylaxis.  This protocol is a summary drawn from the team’s comprehensive emergency action plan, and is intended to summarize the medical team’s preparation for and initial response to the identified condition.  This protocol summary is intended to serve only as a guideline.  The following procedures are not intended to substitute for prudent autonomous medical decision-making required during actual care and management of a sick or injured individual.  Please see the comprehensive emergency action plan for a formal write-up and reference material.

Emergency Management Checklist

BLS Supplies ALS Considerations Protocol Specific Supplies
  • AED
  • BVM ventilator
  • Seal Quick™ resuscitator mask
  • Magill forcepts
  • OPA/NPA
  • Suction pump
  • Oxygen
  • Non-rebreather mask
  • Heart rate / blood pressure monitor
  • Pulse-oximeter
  • Latex free gloves
  • Immediately activate EMS following EAI administration;
  • Epinephrine is relatively short-acting;
  • 2nd dose critical if EMS response time is more than  15min.
  • Benedryl
  • MDI spacing chamber
  • Adult/Ped first and second dose EAI
  • EAI storage container
    • EAI must be kept out of direct sunlight, between 58-86º F.
  • EAI should be used sooner than later.  When in doubt administer EAI.
  • Administer expired or compromised EAI if no other EAIs are available.
  • Ice

 

Management Algorithm

Critical Content Overview

  • Have the person sit or lie down;
  • Pull off the safety cap. Do not touch the administration end which is clearly identified;
  • Place the tip or end of the unit against the outer thigh at a 90° angle;
  • Press hard into the individual’s thigh until EAI mechanism clicks or a verbal prompt is heard, hold in place for 3 seconds;
  • Activate EMS;
  • Prepare second dose;
  • Monitor and support vital signs.
