Severe Weather/Lightning Conditional Protocol Summary

This protocol has been developed by the medical staff to reflect standing orders for prevention of injuries due to severe weather.  This protocol is a summary drawn from the team’s comprehensive emergency action plan, and is intended to summarize the medical team’s preparation for and initial response to the identified condition.  This protocol summary is intended to serve only as a guideline.  The following procedures are not intended to substitute for prudent autonomous medical decision-making required during actual care and management of a sick or injured individual.  Please see the comprehensive emergency action plan for a formal write-up and reference material.

Emergency Management Checklist
BLS Supplies ALS Considerations Protocol Specific Supplies
  • AED
  • BVM ventilator
  • Seal Quick™ resuscitator mask
  • Magill forcepts
  • OPA/NPA
  • Suction pump
  • Oxygen
  • Non-rebreather mask
  • Heart rate / blood pressure monitor
  • Pulse-oximeter
  • Latex free gloves
  • Check with EMS regarding availability of burn treatment kits.
  • Provide basic first aid kits in all Safe Areas;
  • Ensure all Safe Areas have AEDs in close proximity:
    • Assess that it is safe to care for any victims;
    • Care for those who appear dead first;
    • Move the injured person to a safe location;
    • Be prepared to initiate first-aid and CPR;
    • Be prepared to initiate appropriate AED protocols;
    • Activate EMS.

Severe Weather Public Address Announcements  
Severe weather warning “Ladies and Gentlemen, we are now under a severe weather (watch/warning).  Please seek shelter immediately.  The closest shelter is located ___________.  More details will be relayed when it is safe to return to the venue to resume competition.  Thank you.”
Lightning warning “Ladies and Gentlemen, we are now under a severe weather/lightning delay.  Please seek shelter or move to your cars immediately.  More details will be relayed when it is safe to return to the venue to resume competition.  Thank you.”
Postponement “This (game/event) has been postponed due to inclement weather.  We regret and apologize for the inconvenience.  Please follow instructions of ushers, law enforcement and public safety officers in exiting the facility.  Thank you.”
